Environment: Protecting the Natural State

An avid hiker, Jay understands that the natural beauty of Arkansas is a blessing to the people of Arkansas that we have a responsibility to protect. Jay recognizes that global warming is a very real threat and he endorses the recommendations of the Arkansas Governor’s Commission on Global Warming, co-chaired by Representative Kathy Webb. As State Senator, Jay will dedicate energy to turning those recommendations into law in the coming legislative sessions. It is particularly important that low-income Arkansans be provided assistance to carry out weatherization of energy inefficient homes; such programs will save those Arkansans dollars by reducing their home heating and cooling costs and will benefit all Arkansans by making significant inroads into greenhouse emissions.
Closer to home, Jay recognizes that the exceptional clean water supply to central Arkansas must be protected because of its tremendous value to our communities. This means that Jay would stand up against any state action that would take away localities’ power to regulate developers whose projects would harm that water supply. Moreover, Jay will be an active advocate with local decision makers to encourage them to make wise decisions regarding Lake Maumelle. Maintaining clean water is both vital for the health of our citizens as well as keeping our water prices low for residential and commercial users.
