Tanya Holmes knows that Jay "gets it."
Jay Barth “gets it.” From the first conversation we had several years ago, I knew immediately that he was a person that genuinely cared about people, whether it was a student, a colleague or a total stranger. As my college advisor, Jay performed all of the expected obligations of suggesting classes and signing off on schedules, but the Jay I know was and continues to be much more–a listener, a student advocate, a confidant. After many conversations with Jay, I decided to create my own major, Social Justice: Theory and Practice. He was the very first person that I wanted on my faculty committee because of his own activism, research in the topic, and experience. Jay suggested internships with non-profit agencies where I could impact local policy and later recommended summer programs where I could continue my research outside of my community. He “gets” what’s important, knows how to address and resolve issues and has done so as long as I have known him.

His writing and teaching reflect his love of the political process and you can’t help but be energized in his presence. He is the kind of person that needs to be in the state legislature: a well-respected, well-liked, informed voice for the downtown area. Having lived in Little Rock for many years, I know that Jay is the right person to provide a much needed service to the district. He is not a lifelong politician looking for his next office. He’s an ordinary citizen with extraordinary compassion, determined to make a difference.
